It is illegal to transport a firearm in a vehicle on a public highway in Iowa, unless it is unloaded and in a securely fastened case. Here are some requirements for specific firearms.
- You must transport handguns unloaded in a closed container or a securely wrapped package. The container or package must be too large to conceal on your body and must not be readily accessible to anyone in the vehicle.
- Muzzleloaders must be transported in a case. They are considered unloaded if the cap is removed from the nipple, or the priming charge is removed from the pan.
Some exceptions to these requirements may be permitted by Iowa law.
