Lieutenant Eric Anderson: I'm Lieutenant Eric Anderson with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Hunter Education Program, reminding Washington sportsmen when you're heading out in the field this fall in our hunting seasons, to always follow the four basic rules of firearm safety.

  • Always treat every firearm as if it was loaded.
  • Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. That's never at another person, yourself, or even any part of your body.
  • Always be sure of your target and what's beyond it. It's not merely good enough to think that's the game animal you want to harvest. You must be absolutely sure.
  • And finally, always keep your finger outside of the trigger guard until ready to fire.

By always following these four rules, you'll ensure that safe hunting means no accident.
