Hunting Deer Delivers Delicious Meals

One of the primary reasons hunters hunt deer is for the meat they can bring home to their families. Hunting is a long-standing tradition for sustainable food practices, and venison is one of the most popular game meats hunters incorporate into their food practices.

So, if you consistently serve venison, wild turkey, dove, or other types of game for dinner, you're carrying on a sustainable tradition of organic food sourcing. Plus, it's a delicious way to live!

Wild Game Recipes: Venison Chili con Carne Recipe

Ready to try a different type of chili? While beef is often the go-to meat for chili, venison chili is an excellent change-up for this delicious dish.

Prep. Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Serves: 6

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. venison steak (cut into 1-1/2 inch cubes)
  • 1 lb. hot Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion (diced)
  • 1 medium sweet red pepper (diced)
  • 1 (28-oz.) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/4 c. tomato paste
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 1 (14-1/2 oz.) can of beef broth
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 2 tsp. chili powder
  • 2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 c. minced fresh parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Hot cooked rice (optional)

Cook the onion, sausage, and red pepper in a Dutch oven over medium heat. When the meat is no longer pink, drain it and set it aside.

Next, brown the venison in oil in the same pan. Drain it, then add tomatoes, tomato paste, broth, brown sugar, cumin, oregano, chili powder, pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and sausage mix.

Simmer the mixture uncovered for 1 to 1-1/2 hours or until the venison is tender. Stir in the parsley.

Serve over hot rice, if desired.
