How Do I Get My Hunter Education Card in Texas?

If you were born on or after September 2, 1971, you must complete a Texas Parks & Wildlife-approved hunter education course to hunt legally.

You must have this certification to purchase a hunting license. Briefly, here are your options:

1. Take an Online Course

If you’re 17 or older, you can complete the entire certification online. This means you can take the Hunter-Ed course for Texas, pass the quizzes and final exam, pay any required fees, and then you’ll be able to access your certificate to print a temporary one.

TPWD will email a link to print a permanent certificate.

An online course is the most convenient way to learn everything you need to know and get your certification.

2. Take an Online Course and Field Course (Young Hunters)

If you’re under 17 years old, after finishing the online portion, you’ll also need to attend a Field Day course. This is an in-person, hands-on instruction session to complete your certification.

Then, after all requirements are met, your permanent certificate is made available for download/print via the TPWD system.

3. Take a Classroom-Only Course

Hunters of any age can also take an in-person class with an instructor. Classes include six hours of basic hunting safety essentials, including firearm instruction and legal and ethical practices. Course fees include $15 plus any additional range or facility fees.

You'll also need to pre-register for the class on a date, time, and at a location that's convenient for you.

3 Easy Steps to Get Your 2025 Texas Hunting License

With your hunter certification, you're ready to get your license and hunt! Here are three easy steps to get your Texas hunting license.

  1. Meet the Requirements (and Complete a Hunter Education Course)
Again, if you were born on or after September 2, 1971, you must complete a Texas-approved hunter education (safety) course before purchasing your license.

Hunter-Ed makes it easy to do that with our online course, approved by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD).

  2. Choose the Right License Type and Purchase It
Determine which license you need: resident, nonresident, youth, or specialty license (or a combination with fishing). Then, purchase your license online via the Texas Parks & Wildlife website, by phone, or at an approved retailer (e.g., sporting goods stores, TPWD offices, and other designated locations).

  3. Carry Proof of Your License When Hunting (Digital or Printed)
You can choose a digital license (viewable via the Texas Hunt & Fish / Outdoor Annual apps) or have it printed. Always carry your license (digital or physical) when hunting.

If tags are required (for deer, turkey, etc.), make sure to tag your harvest properly.

Step 3: Where to Get Your Texas Hunting License in 2025

Texas hunter education courses are now behind you. You're ready to get your hunting license and hunt!

Remember that you'll need a new hunting license every year. Last year's Texas hunting license isn't valid in 2025. Depending on what you plan to hunt or trap, if you're a resident or nonresident, or if you qualify for youth, apprentice, or senior hunting licenses, make sure you research carefully and purchase the correct license to hunt legally this season.

Texas also offers combination hunting and fishing licenses.

Buy Online

The easiest way to get your license is to buy it online. This can be especially convenient if you don't live close to a retailer or you plan to hunt in Texas as a resident of another state.

You can buy digital or printed licenses and tags through the TPWD website.

Buy from a Retailer

If you prefer to pick up a license in person, Texas offers plenty of retail locations offering 2025 hunting licenses.

Use the "Find a Retailer" feature on the TPWD website to find a location near you. In general, most Academy Sports, Wal-Mart stores, other sporting goods stores, and some gun ranges offer annual hunting licenses in Texas.

Why Hunter Education Is Important

Why do states require hunter safety education?

It's a vital part of responsible hunting (for new hunters and seasoned hunters), whether you’re using a bow, a crossbow, or a firearm.

When every hunter passes one of the approved hunter education courses in Texas, this helps ensure that hunters know how to protect themselves, others, and the environment while preserving the integrity of the sport.

Hunter safety education is crucial because it:

  • Prevents Accidents and Injuries: Comprehensive training in firearm handling, safe shooting practices, and hunting techniques significantly reduces the risk of accidental shootings and other field-related injuries.
  • Helps Create Skilled, Knowledgeable Hunters: Safety courses teach critical skills such as firearm safety, navigation, first aid, and survival techniques. They also teach respectful behavior toward other hunters, landowners, and the outdoors.
  • Promotes Ethical and Responsible Hunting: Every hunter must be an ethical hunter. Hunter education emphasizes respect for wildlife, adherence to hunting laws, and the importance of sustainable practices to help ensure healthy animal populations for future generations.
  • Ensures Legal Compliance: In most areas (including Texas), completing a certified hunter education course is required to purchase a hunting license. This reinforces the importance of understanding and following state regulations.

In short, hunter education helps keep the sport safe, maintains healthy animal populations, and teaches essential skills to help hunters tag out.

So, before you trust another course from another state or assume that "one course works in any state" to prepare you for hunting in Texas, take a few hours to sign up for the Hunter-Ed Texas hunter education course and get certified!
