Acquiring Firearms
As per Chapter 134 of HRS, Chief of Police of the respective county issues permits to acquire firearms.
- The applicant must:
- Be a citizen of the United States and...
- Be 21 years or older and...
- Have signed a waiver, at time of application, that allows the Chief of Police of the respective county to access any records that have a bearing on the mental health of the applicant.
- The applicant is not:
- A fugitive from justice.
- Under indictment for, have been bound over to circuit court for, or convicted of any felony, crime of violence, or illegal sale of any drug.
- Currently or has been under treatment or counseling for addiction to, abuse of, or dependence on any dangerous, harmful, detrimental drug, intoxicating compound, or liquor.
- Currently or has been diagnosed as having a significant behavioral, emotional, or mental disorder.
- Under a restraining order of any court that specifically includes a statement that possession, control, or transfer of ownership of a firearm or ammunition.
