Cage or Culvert Type Traps

Cage-type live traps for bear are defined as traps designed as a cage, tunnel, or other enclosure with a door that, when tripped, closes in a manner that prevents the bear’s escape. The device must have adequate openings for ventilation and cooling when the door is closed.

Designs include trailer mounted units as well as stable free-standing devices with a cylinder or cage large enough for a bear to enter, and strong enough to hold a captured bear without injury to the bear, or damage to the trap.

Follow these additional recommendations to ensure the humane capture of bears:

• Avoid setting traps in direct sun light.
• Use quality materials of appropriate size and strength.
• Ensure cage-style traps are well ventilated.
• During periods of extreme heat, consider increasing tending frequency or even consider deactivating trap during this time.
• Remote cameras or trigger sensors can be useful to notify of a captured animal, but remember, these do not replace required daily tending and site-inspections which are mandatory.
• Minimize sharp edges on trap parts, especially inside the trap.
• Ensure your cage-style trap has solid welding around all seams.
