Amber: With the importance of tree stand safety, I’d like to show you some other common errors that hunters make when using a tree stand. Too often, the stabilizer bar on the tree stand will fall or become disengaged. It is important to take your time when putting your stand together and to do safety checks prior to its use. In addition, many hunters will forget to put the shooter safety bar down into position, or they won’t use it because they have a fall-arrest system. It is critical to use both. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to install and use your tree stand.
Another common mistake is when hunters use their haul line to raise their firearm to the top of the tree stand. Always ensure that the firearm is unloaded before attaching it to the haul line. Never attach the haul line to the trigger guard area of the firearm. Instead, attach it to the barrel and stock so that the muzzle is pointed away from you.
Another area in which we see a lot of accidents is when hunters climb down from a tree stand. First, you should always use a haul line to lower your unloaded firearm. Never climb down with it in-hand. This is very unsafe, and you are also losing your three points of contact. When you make your way down, always face the ladder or tree. You will be more stable and have better balance.
Tree stand safety is extremely important. The result can end in either injury or death; so in order to prevent this from happening, it is important to take your time and do your safety checks, as well as follow all of the safety steps.
