Trapper setting a trap for beaver

The purpose of the trapper education program is about more than safety and requirements. It has been expanded to produce responsible, knowledgeable, and involved trappers—trappers who understand the importance of complying with trapping laws and behaving ethically.

Trapper education is important because it does the following:

  • It decreases negative trapping-related incidents.
  • It promotes responsible trapping behavior. This includes compliance with laws and regulations, a strong focus on the responsible treatment of animals, and ethical trapper behavior.
  • It focuses on best management practices for trapping which specify the most effective outdoor trapping techniques and give practical tips on being selective and efficient.

This program gives beginners a good foundation, and it provides a refresher for veteran trappers.

Ultimately, the mission of the trapper education program is to ensure the continuation of the safe, ethical, and responsible trapping tradition.
