What is the test-out exam?
The Colorado Hunter Education Test-Out Exam is a 50-question, timed exam. The exam is $29.50. You have one opportunity to pass the exam with 90% or better in 30 minutes or less. If you do not pass the exam, you must complete Colorado hunter education or use an Apprentice License.
Hunters Eligible for the Exam
Hunters Age 50 and Older
You are eligible to take this Colorado Hunter Education Test-Out Exam if you are 50 years of age or older. Hunters age 50 and up do not have to be a resident of Colorado to take this exam.
To register for the exam, hunters age 50 and up must provide their Colorado Customer Identification (CID) number at registration. If you do not already have a CID number, or have lost track of it, please contact any Colorado Parks and Wildlife office or call the main number at 303-297-1192, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. MST. (If you have purchased any license from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, your CID number is printed on it.)
Upon successful completion of the exam, please wait approximately 24 hours for the Hunter Education Number you receive at the end of the exam to be verified against your CID record. Once your record has been verified, you'll be able to purchase a Colorado Hunting License.
U.S. Military Personnel
You are eligible to take this Colorado Hunter Education Test-Out Exam if you are a member of the U.S. military. This includes veterans, the National Guard, and those on active duty or in the reserves.
Upon completion of the Colorado Hunter Education Test-Out Exam, you will be required to present military identification, along with your Colorado U.S. Military Test-Out Voucher, at a Colorado Parks and Wildlife office to have it verified. Accepted types of identification can be found here.
Once your military status and Hunter Education Number have been verified, you will be able to purchase a Colorado Hunting License.
What if I don't meet the above requirements?
If you don't meet the above eligibility requirements, you cannot take the online Colorado Hunter Education Test-Out Exam, but you can still go hunting in Colorado by completing hunter education. Colorado also accepts hunter education certifications from all U.S. states and many countries.
What is my proof of successfully passing the exam?
After passing the exam, hunters who are 50 years old or older will receive a Colorado Test-Out Completion Certificate. Military personnel will receive a Colorado U.S. Military Test-Out Voucher.
Once your information has been verified, you may purchase a Colorado hunting license.

What is the permanent Colorado Hunter Education Number?
The Colorado Hunter Education Number is proof that you have successfully passed the Colorado Challenge Exam Test-Out Exam. The Hunter Education Number will be printed on your proof of exam completion and will be used by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife to verify your record.
