Course Outline

  • Studies show that the majority of OHV accidents occur when the rider unexpectedly encounters an obstacle, such as a rock or a ditch. Maintaining a safe speed is critical.
  • Wear a helmet, gloves, and proper clothing such as sturdy boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt.
  • Show respect for others by watching your OHV’s noise level. Do not disturb wildlife or other hunters.
  • Be aware of county air quality ordinances, particularly in Maricopa and Pinal counties.
  • Youths under 18 years of age may not operate, ride on or ride in an OHV unless they are wearing a properly fitted and fastened U.S. DOT–approved helmet.
  • All operators are required to wear eye protection while operating an OHV, unless the vehicle is equipped with a protective windshield.
  • Lights are required when operating during hours of darkness.
  • Don’t drink and operate your OHV. DUI laws apply to off-highway operation.
  • Additionally these activities are illegal:
    • Reckless operation
    • Vandalism
    • Harassment of wildlife from motorized vehicles

You must never drive faster than is safe for present conditions, circumstances and actual or potential hazards. Whether speed limit signs are present or not, you must drive your OHV at a speed that allows safe operation and full control of the machine at all times.
