Federal Grants

Pittman-Robertson (PR) and Dingell-Johnson (DJ)

PR: 11% federal excise tax on sporting arms, ammunition, and archery equipment, as well as a 10% tax on handguns.

DJ: 10% federal excise tax on fishing equipment, 3% on electric boat motors, along with a motorboat and small engine fuels tax and import duties and interests.

Each state’s proportion of the federal funds is based on the area of the state and the number of licensed hunters in the state. The state covers the full amount of an approved project and then applies for reimbursement through federal aid for up to 75% of the project’s expenses; the state is responsible for the other 25% of the project’s cost.

Heritage Fund

Created in 1990 through the efforts of a broad coalition of Arizona citizens, the Heritage Fund uses lottery ticket sales to provide up to $10 million each year to the AZGFD.

OHV Recreation Fund

Revenue derived from motor vehicle fuel taxes and the sales of OHV indicia collected by the Arizona Department of Transportation and transferred to the Arizona State Parks Board. The Department receives 35% of annual collections via transfers from the Arizona State Parks Board.
