Course Outline

Arizona is home to four quail species—Gambel’s, Mearns', scaled and California—plus mourning and white-wing doves, along with opportunities for waterfowl hunting along waterways and Refuge systems for ducks and geese.

Hunters aiming at a squirrel

Squirrel hunters

Small game such as tree squirrels, cottontail rabbits and predators can be hunted throughout the state in many of the most sought-after big game hunting units in season, all affording more opportunities to learn about those units while waiting on your hopeful tag.

There are currently more big game hunters than big game hunting opportunities, and the Department receives more applications than there are available permits. Although not getting drawn for big game tags every season can be disappointing, many opportunities abound in hunting small game, particularly in the fall and early winter months. Yet many hunters do not take advantage of these opportunities. Small game and upland bird hunts can provide some of the most exciting and memorable hunts, particularly for novice or young hunters, and allow more experienced hunters to mentor and hone the hunting skills of younger or less experienced hunters.

Up next are some of the many opportunities to harvest small game and where in Arizona to experience small game hunting at its best.
