These non-game species are protected and may not be hunted or trapped.
- Amphibians
- Bats*
- Fish
- Reptiles
- Wild birds
This includes eggs, nests, bodies, body parts, and anything made from the body parts of these protected non-game species.
*Bats, except for Indiana bats, are not protected if they are found in buildings where people work or live. Indiana bats are on Iowa’s list of threatened and endangered species.
Unprotected Non-Game Species
These non-game species are unprotected:
- Common Garter Snake
- European Starling
- House Sparrow
Timber rattlesnakes are protected only in the following counties.*
- Allamakee
- Clayton
- Delaware
- Des Moines
- Dubuque
- Fayette
- Henry
- Jackson
- Jones
- Lee
- Madison
- Van Buren
- Winneshiek
*Timber rattlesnakes are not protected in these counties if they are within 50 yards of a house where people live.
