What You Learned
Game species in Iowa include upland and small game, migratory game birds, turkeys, deer, and furbearers. Some mammals are protected and may not be trapped or hunted in Iowa.
Depending on your age, you may be required to carry proof showing successful completion of an Iowa Department of Natural Resources–approved hunter education course to hunt with a firearm or bow and arrow.
The Iowa DNR issues different types of licenses, depending on the game you plan to hunt or trap. In addition to a license, you may be required to have a Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (Federal Duck Stamp) and register with the Harvest Information Program.
Hunting seasons, times, and possession limits are determined based on your hunting equipment, the species being hunted, and your hunting location.
