How do I get my Maine Hunter Education Firearms Card?
1. Study and pass the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife–Approved online course.
Study and pass the $24.95 course. Throughout the Maine Hunter Ed Course, you’ll be tested on what you’ve learned.
2. Complete your age-dependent certification requirements.
If you are 16 years or older, after successfully completing the online course, you’ll immediately print out your permanent Hunter Education Firearms Card.
If you are under 16 years of age, you’ll immediately print out your proof of online course completion, which you will need to bring with you to the Skills and Exam Day. You need to locate and sign up for the Skills and Exam Day. To sign up, go to https://www.maine.gov/ifw/programs-resources/safety-courses/firearms-hunter-safety.html.
Remember: Passing the online course does not guarantee you a spot at the Skills and Exam Day.
3. Get your Maine Hunter Education Firearms Card.
If you are 16 years or older, you’ll print your permanent Hunter Education Firearms Card after successfully passing the course and paying the fee.
If you are under 16 years of age, the Hunter Education Firearms Card will be given to you after you complete the Skills and Exam Day.

Do you need Maine Hunting education?
You need education to purchase an adult hunting license unless you can show proof of having previously held an adult license to hunt with firearms in any year beginning with 1976.

Is my Maine Hunter Education Firearms Card accepted elsewhere?
All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the Maine Hunter Education Firearms Card. Likewise, Maine will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)
Quizzes and/or Exams
I failed a unit quiz. Have I failed the course?
If you fail a unit quiz, you can take it again until you pass. You must score at least 70% on the unit quizzes to pass.
Do I have to take an online exam?
The Final Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 80% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

Once you pass and pay for the online course, you will be able to immediately print your proof of online completion and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.
If you are under 16 years of age, you will need to bring this document with you to your Skills and Exam Day.
What is the permanent Maine Hunter Education Firearms Card?
If you are 16 years or older, the Hunter Education Firearms Card is proof that you have successfully completed all the hunter education requirements and allows you to legally purchase a hunting license in Maine.
If you are under 16 years of age, you will receive the Hunter Education Firearms Card from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife after you successfully complete the Skills and Exam Day.
Replacement of Lost or Damaged Documents
How do I replace my Hunter Education Firearms Card if I’ve lost it or it has been damaged?
To replace a lost or destroyed Hunter Education Firearms Card, hunters age 16 and older, can log in to the course and print a new one. Hunters age 15 and younger, can order one at http://www.maine.gov/ifw/programs-resources/safety-courses/index.html.
