Take this New Mexico Department of Game and Fish–approved quiz to complete your mentored-youth requirement for New Mexico. Find out if you're eligible below.
What is the mentored youth and mentor quiz?
The New Mexico Mentored Youth Quiz is a 25-question, untimed quiz. The quiz fee is $4.95. You have unlimited opportunities to pass the quiz with 80% or better. If you do not pass the quiz, you may retake the quiz. The quiz covers topics such as hunting laws, regulations, survival, firearms, and identifying wildlife.
Hunters Eligible for the Quiz
Hunters Age 8 to 17 Years Old
You are eligible to take this Mentored Youth Quiz if you are 8 to 17 years of age.
You must be a first-time hunter.
You must not have passed a state approved Hunter Education course.
To register for the quiz, hunters must provide their New Mexico Customer Identification Number (CIN) at registration. If you do not already have a CIN, or have lost track of it, please visit the New Mexico Department of Game & Fish (NMDGF) website or call the NMDGF’s Information Center toll-free at 1-888-248-6866.
Mentors
Mentors eligible for this quiz are parents, guardians, or adults with parental consent who are at least 18 years of age.
Any Mentor responsible for a Mentored-Youth (MY) Hunter is required to have a Mentor Number issued by the NMDGF or a hunter education number issued by the NMDGF (or another qualified state) before taking an MY Hunter afield. If you do not have a hunter education number to satisfy the requirements above, you are eligible for this quiz.
The Mentor Number is not required to apply for hunts or to purchase a hunting license.
What if I don't meet the above requirements?
If you don't meet the above eligibility requirements, you cannot take the online Mentored Youth Quiz and become a Mentored-Youth Hunter.
What is my proof of successfully passing the quiz?
After passing the quiz, hunters who are 8 to 17 years old will have their MY Hunter Number automatically upload into their NMDGF customer account. Mentor's Hunter Number will also automatically upload into their NMDGF customer account.
The MY Hunter Number will allow youth to purchase a Game-hunting License or a Game-hunting & Fishing License and apply for or purchase applicable hunting licenses. See the NMDGF’s website for full license details.
Participation as a Mentored-Youth Hunter is a one-time opportunity and good for two consecutive license years.
