Course Outline

Foothold traps are the most common type used. The trap has two smooth arms called “jaws.” When the furbearer steps on a pan in the center of the trap, the jaws spring together, gripping the foot.

The following are important features of the foothold trap.

  • Foothold traps are versatile. They come in several sizes. They can be used both on land and in water. This versatility adds to the popularity of the foothold trap.
  • Foothold traps can be set to capture specific furbearers and avoid non-target species.
  • In most cases, unwanted animals can be released unharmed.
