Operating a Bodygrip Trap
Personal safety is more of an issue when handling bodygrip traps, especially the larger sizes. Safety devices, such as safety locks and spring latches, protect the trapper and make it easier to position and anchor the trap. Follow these guidelines when setting a bodygrip trap.
- Compress the springs of smaller traps by hand.
- On double-spring traps, use safety hooks to keep springs compressed until you set the trap in place.
- Use a setting tool and a safety gripper to set larger traps (#220 or larger). Do not remove these devices until you have finished the set.
- When using a large bodygrip trap, always carry a length of rope with a strong loop in it. If you get caught in the trap, put one foot in the loop. Run the rope through the eyes of one spring, around the eyes, and back through the eyes. Pull on the rope with your free hand or teeth until you open the jaw far enough to set the safety hook for that spring. Repeat this process for the other spring. You should be able to relieve enough pressure to free yourself.
- Be very careful when setting bodygrip traps underwater. If the trap is staked underwater or under ice, you may not be able to free yourself if the trap closes on your hand or arm.
- Safety devices should be disengaged only when the set is completed.
- Trap with a buddy whenever possible.
