Selling Considerations
There are several important points to consider when it comes to selling your pelts.
- Be aware that when you sell is important.
- This decision requires you to speculate on the fur market two or three months ahead.
- As a general rule, pelts will bring more money later in the season. Early pelts tend to bring less because the fur may not be prime. In addition, the fur market is not stable until later in the season.
- On the other hand, if you wait too long to sell, the market may drop. In that case, you will lose money.
- Between Christmas and the New Year, furs of all species tend to bring good money. This is usually the safest time to sell.
- Consider waiting until you have more pelts.
- Some young trappers run to the fur buyer each time they catch a muskrat or two. This may be your best choice if you do not have a good place to store your pelts. However, be aware that the dealer will grade each and every piece you bring.
- If you hold your pelts until you have a “lot,” you often will get a better price. The dealer may offer you a price for the full lot. In addition, the more pelts you have, the more bargaining power you have.
- Shop around.
- Not all fur dealers offer the same price, so check with several buyers to see what they are paying.
- Check with other trappers to see what they are getting for their pelts. Often a chat with an experienced trapper will help you decide when and where to sell your pelts.
- Do not feel committed to sell just because you take your pelts to a dealer. If you are not satisfied with the price, try another dealer.
