Using Cable Devices on Land
Cable devices can be used on land or water to capture targeted species, such as coyotes and wolves, or in water for beaver. Refer to Montana regulations for specific requirements.
- Use 11- or 12-gauge wire as a stabilizing wire (or “pigtail”) to hold the cable loop in position to trap the target furbearer.
- Do not set devices on trails used by people, domestic animals, or deer. Instead, place the device in an existing path or trail used by your target furbearer. Ideally, choose a spot where the path narrows. Center the loop in the path.
- Do not use bait or lure with non-powered cable devices. Instead, place the device in an existing path or trail used by your target furbearer. Ideally, choose a spot where the path narrows. Center the loop in the path.
Refer to Montana trapping regulations for specifics on wolf and coyote snares.
