- Attach Accreditation Form
- Be a member of an Approved Hunting Organisation (AHO)
- Pay the licence fee
There is no minimum age to take this course. You must be at least 12 years old to apply for an R-Licence.
You do not have to be a resident of New South Wales to take this online course.
About this course
The Combined Online R-Licence Accreditation course has been divided into 2 mandatory sections. You are required to completed both sections.
- Compulsory learning – NSW Hunter Education program
This section contains compulsory learning that will give you the basic knowledge required to be safe, ethical and responsible hunters.
- R-Licence categories
There are three (3) hunting methods permitted to be used when hunting on public land in NSW:
- Firearms (rifles,shotguns and blackpowder firearms)
- Bows
- Dogs
To use any of these hunting methods on public land, you must first become accredited for the relevant category by completing the training module in this course.
Once you have successfully completed both sections, you must print out or save the Accreditation Form that you receive. This Accreditation Form must be attached to your R-Licence Application.
Please note, if you are not permitted to:
- hold an Australian Firearms Licence, you must not select the Firearms category when you apply for your R-Licence through DPI Hunting.
- legally own dogs, you must not select the Dogs category when you apply for your R-Licence through DPI Hunting.

How do I get my New South Wales R-Licence?
1. Study and pass the online course.
Pay the $50.00 AUD New South Wales Online R-Licence Accreditation Course fee, study the course and pass the Final Exam.
2. Print or save your Combined Online R-Licence Accreditation Form.
After successfully completing the online course, you’ll be able to immediately print out or save your Combined Online R-Licence Accreditation Form. Your R-Licence Accreditation Form is not a licence and does not permit you to hunt on New South Wales public land.
3. Apply to the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries to get your R-Licence.
Go to the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries website and complete the application form. Make sure you attach your R-Licence and your evidence of your Approved Hunting Organisation membership.

Do you need the New South Wales R-Licence?
The Restricted Game Hunting Licence (R-Licence) allows you to hunt game and feral animals on public land that has been declared and opened to hunting, or on private land with the permission of the landholder.
What is the minimum age to take this online course?
There is no minimum age to take this course. You must be at least 12 years old to apply for an R-Licence.
Course Approval and Acceptance
Is the New South Wales Combined Online R-Licence Accreditation Course approved by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries?
The New South Wales Combined Online R-Licence Accreditation Course is approved and accepted by the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries for the purpose of applying for a NSW Restricted Game Hunting Licence (R-Licence).
Is my New South Wales R-Licence accepted elsewhere?
All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory hunter education requirements will accept the New South Wales R-Licence. Likewise, New South Wales will accept Hunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)
Quizzes and/or Exams
I failed a unit quiz. Have I failed the course?
If you fail a unit quiz, you can take it again until you pass. You must score at least 70% on the unit quizzes to pass.
Do I have to take an online exam?
The final exam is the exam you take at the end of the online courses. You must score at least 93%. You will be given 3 attempts to pass the final exam. If you do not complete the final exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.
If you fail the final exam after 3 attempts, you will be required to pay the fee to reattempt the course.

Once you pay for and pass the online course, you will be able to immediately print out the Combined Online R-Licence. This is your proof of online course completion.
What is the R-Licence Accreditation Form?
The R-Licence Accreditation Form is proof that you have successfully completed the education requirements and qualifies you to apply for an R-Licence. Your R-Licence Accreditation form is not a licence and does not permit you to hunt on New South Wales public land.
