Course Outline

The use of cable devices by certified trappers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is highly regulated.

  • Here are some examples of Pennsylvania regulations.
    • One type of cable device, the cable restraint, is permitted on dry land for foxes and coyotes during late winter periods (late December to mid-February) when freezing conditions make traditional trapping methods ineffective.
    • Another type of cable device, the snare, is permitted for beavers and river otters in aquatic sets during the open trapping season for those species.
  • The regulations regarding species, seasons, cable device construction, and cable device locations are reviewed and approved annually by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.
