Pennsylvania Requirements for Cable Restraints and Snares
Cable Restraints
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, a cable restraint must:
- Be made of a galvanized stranded steel cable with a minimum diameter of 3/32 inches.
- Not have a cable that exceeds 7 feet in length from the anchor point to the lock when fully contacting the minimum loop stop.
- Be equipped with at least one swivel device (which allows for 360° rotation) between the loop and the anchor.
- Have stops affixed to the cable to ensure that the circumference of the cable which makes up the loop is not greater than 38 inches when fully open or less than 8 inches when fully closed.
- Be equipped with an approved relaxing lock. The lock may not be constructed with moving parts.
- Include a breakaway device affixed between the lock and cable or at the end of the cable. The breakaway device must be rated at 375 pounds or less.
- Be maintained in good condition so that all components operate properly.
Snares
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, a snare must:
- Be a looped galvanized or stainless stranded steel cable that is 3/32 inches in diameter. There is no maximum length.
- Be equipped with a mechanical sliding metal release lock.
- Have a metal ferrule crimped onto the cable to prevent the snare loop from closing to a circumference that is less than 7 inches.
- Be either partially or fully submerged in a waterway, watercourse, marsh, pond, or other body of water.
- Be maintained in good condition so that all components operate properly.
