The Course Objectives
This course is designed to teach the basic concepts, methods, and requirements for effectively and ethically constructing, monitoring, and troubleshooting cable devices in Pennsylvania.
- The course includes:
- Information on how to use cable devices in a proper manner to capture beavers, river otters, foxes, and coyotes
- Basic guidance on the components, construction, and legal use of cable devices in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
- Basic education in trapping ethics and how to use trapping for the management of wildlife
- At the end of this course, you should be able to:
- Understand the basic terminology of cable devices.
- Understand the difference between cable restraints and snares.
- Be familiar with Pennsylvania trapping laws and regulations governing cable devices.
- Be familiar with the common furbearer species of Pennsylvania.
- Know the four species of furbearers that can be legally trapped with cable devices.
- Understand basic cable device design and function.
- Understand and recognize cable device components and specifications.
- Know how to properly construct, treat, and maintain cable devices.
- Understand and comprehend responsible and effective use of cable devices.
- Correctly identify seven locations where you should avoid using cable device sets.
- Correctly identify six locations for set placement for effective cable devices.
- Know how to make the correct cable device sets for target furbearers.
- Correctly identify nine ways to minimize problems with cable device sets.
- Understand the goals of Best Management Practices for trapping.
- Correctly identify six problems with cable device sets.
- Correctly identify the causes and solutions for various problems you could encounter with cable devices.
- Correctly identify ten common ethical considerations for using cable devices.
